Liyu Lake 鯉魚潭, Hualien 花蓮
The 104-hectare Liyu Lake, the largest inland lake in eastern Taiwan, is located south of Hualien city and surrounded by forested hills. This serene and scenic spot is renowned for its well-maintained lakeside cycling paths, flat and easy nature walks, as well as boating and other water activities.
There is a flat and easy 5km cycling loop around the lake. On the northern side, you’ll find the Hualien Water Sports Training Centre 花蓮水上運動訓練中心, as well as the waterfront Liyu Lake Stone Carving Park 鯉魚潭石雕公園, a great place for a relaxing walk with stunning water views. Boats for rental and boating activities are available on both the northern and southern sides of the lake.
Liyu Lake is known to be less touristic, less crowded, and hence it is quiet, and can be a peaceful nature escape. It is served by infrequent bus services. The bus journey takes roughly an hour from Hualien Bus Station to reach the lake. Driving from Hualien City takes roughly 30 minutes.
The Walk
Bus stops and car parks can be found on both the northern and southern sides of the lake. Visitors may walk on the lakeside walking paths alongside Chinan Road 池南路 Section 1 in either direction between Liyu Lake Stone Carving Park 鯉魚潭石雕公園 to Liyu Lake South Pier 鯉魚潭南碼頭.
The one-way distance from Liyu Lake Stone Carving Park to Liyu Lake South Pier is approximately 1.8 km.
