Toronto's City Skyline viewed from Toronto Island Park

Central Canada Road Trip: Toronto Island Park

Date of Visit: 21 Sep 2019

Toronto Island Park is a group of 15 islands

Toronto Island Park, in Lake Ontario, is a group of 15 islands inter-connected by pathways and bridges. The island park is a very popular destination for a day-outing for the locals.

Centre Island, Ward’s Island, and Hanlan’s Point are the three primary Toronto Island destinations.  Centre Island is in the middle, sandwiched between Ward’s Island on the east and Hanlan’s Point on the west.

There is no car in Toronto Island Park

There is no road link between the islands and mainland Toronto.  It is no wonder there is no car in Toronto Island Park.

Access to the island park is by the City of Toronto ferries operating from Jack Layton Ferry Terminal or by water taxis.  Water taxi operators operate from Harbourfront Centre.  The ferry ride or water taxis from the Toronto city ferry stop to Toronto Island Park take about 15 minutes.  The three primary Toronto Island destinations – Centre Island, Ward’s Island, and Hanlan’s Point each has a ferry docking point.  Centre Island is the most popular so ferries go more often to Centre Island.

Billy Bishop Island Airport

Billy Bishop Island Airport is located in the Toronto Islands and is adjacent to Hanlan’s Point.  The airport is accessible by a different ferry service and has a road connection to the mainland, and is isolated from Toronto Island Park.

Things to do on Toronto Island Park

You can walk, run, ride your bike on the island, sit by the beach or in the parkland, walk your dog (on a leash), have a picnic, or have a drink or a meal at one of the restaurants.  It is approximately 5 km to walk from Ward’s Island to Hanlan’s Point.

From Toronto Island Park you will have a great view of Toronto’s city skyline.  The best view of the Toronto city skyline is from the Olympic island.

The historic 200-year-old Gibraltar Point Lighthouse in Toronto Island Park is the oldest lighthouse on the Great Lakes. It is said to be haunted but is not opened to the public to visit.

You can spend a whole day in Toronto Islands.  Check out this Toronto Islands Map for the places to visit and things to do in Toronto Island Park.
