A view of Avon River from the South Street Road Bridge in York, Western Australia

Walk by The Avon River: York Riverside, Western Australia

Avon River

Avon River flows through the towns of Brookton, Beverley, York, Northam, and Toodyay, and continues its flow as Swan River near Walyunga National Park, approximately 35 km northeast of Perth CBD.  Therefore, Swan River and Avon River are actually the same rivers.

York

York is a charming small rural town located by the Avon River 97km east of Perth.  It is a lovely place to visit on a day trip out from Perth or it can be a destination or a brief stop on your road trip from Perth to Kalgoorlie, Wave Rock (Hyden), or Esperance.

York is the oldest inland European settlement in Western Australia, and the town is listed as a Heritage Precinct with a significant number of historic buildings throughout the township.  York Visitors Centre has information about several York Walk Trails for visitors to explore and understand more about York.  Want to find out more?  Check out their York Trails webpage

Avon Park by the Avon River

If you would like to go for a relaxing walk by the water, Avon Park by the Avon River is a good place to go in York.  Avon Park has a children’s playground, toilet facilities, BBQ, and benches where you can enjoy fantastic views of the Avon River.

Starting from South Street, which is only about 200m from York Visitor Centre on Avon Terrace, you can walk on sealed walking paths in Avon Park, and then continue on the suspension bridge over Avon River at Pool Street.  From the suspension bridge, you can continue on gravel tracks by the Avon River riverbanks to Ford Street.

The distance by the Avon River riverbank from South Street to Ford Street is approximately 500m.

You may continue to walk further north of Ford Street by the Avon River.  You decide how far you want to walk.

Take note that the ancient Avon River Ford Crossing at Ford Street may not be passable in the winter months when water levels can reach knee-high.
