The Kent Street Weir Park and The Canning River in The Downstream Direction

Walk by Canning River: Canning River Regional Park

Canning River Regional Park is a huge 266-hectare park that covers approximately 6km on both sides of the Canning River.  The Park is just 9km southeast of Perth CBD in the City of Canning.  Being adjacent to the suburbs of Cannington, Ferndale, and Wilson, the Park is very popular with the people living in and near these suburbs.

Canning River Regional Park is flat, therefore very easy to walk or jog or cycle or for the wheelchairs.  If you just want to enjoy a relaxed walk or jog or cycle, you may stay on the sealed and well-signed walking paths.  If you are more adventurous, you may walk or jog on the less-well-defined walking trails by the river banks.  Unfortunately cycling on the less well-defined trails by the river banks will be difficult, therefore it is advisable to only cycle on the sealed paths.  You choose the distance you want to walk or jog or cycle.

The Park has well-designed walking trails with different themes to enhance your walking experience.  You may explore biodiversity present within the Park, or learn about the Park’s history, or learn about the people who lived in this area.

Visit Park and Wildlife Service Website Kent Street Weir Park Webpage for information about the walking trails or check out the display boards in the Kent Street Weir Park.

If you drive, the best and the easiest way to access the Park is to park your vehicle at Kent Street Weir Park Car Park.

Kent Street Weir

The 52m long Kent Street Weir across the Canning River was built in 1927.  The weir served to prevent the movement of saltwater up the Canning River.  This was to maintain freshwater for agricultural purposes for settlers adjacent to the Canning River at that time.

The current new bridge over the Kent Street Weir was completed in 2017.  It was built as part of the Kent Street Weir upgrade to extend its life by 50 years.  The bridge connects Kent Street Weir Park to the Canning River Regional Park walking trails.  It facilitates access of pedestrians, cyclists, and wheelchairs to the Canning River Regional Park.

Kent Street Weir Park

This is a very popular park with shelters and BBQs for family outings, a fenced off-leash dog exercise area, and a children’s play area.  There are information display boards about the park, walking trails, and Canning River paddling routes.  There is also a community-building for water-based activities storage, and very often you see dragon boating, kayaking, and canoeing activities in action.

In the adjacent Wilson Park, you will find Castledare Miniature Railways Wilson Park Station.  Check out Castledare Miniature Railways Website about the train services if you plan a family outing taking the miniature train.
