Taichung 台中
Taichung, with a population of more than 2.8 million, is the second largest city in Taiwan.
Taiwan’s High-Speed Rail 台湾高铁 has a High-Speed Rail Taichung Station 高铁台中站 (also called High-speed Rail Wuri Station 高铁乌日站) just outside Taichung city centre, and is an 18-minute drive or a 20-minute local Taiwan Railway 台湾铁路 train ride to Taichung city centre. With high-speed rail, a train trip between High-Speed Rail Taichung Station and Taipei High-Speed Rail Station can take less than 50 minutes.
Taichung City has one mass rapid transit (MRT) line in operation now, which is the Wuri Wenxin Beitun Line 乌日文心北屯线 with a total of 18 stations. There are plans to expand the Taichung MRT 台中捷运.
Some of the popular attractions in and around Taichung are Feng Chia Night Market 逢甲夜市, National Taichung Theatre 台中国家歌剧院, Taichung Park 台中公园, Gaomei Wetlands 高美湿地, Guguan Hot Spring 谷关温泉, Lishan Scenic Area 梨山风景区, and Sun Moon Lake Scenic Area 日月潭风景区.
Taichung Park 台中公园
Established in 1903, Taichung Park 台中公园 is Taiwan’s first century-old park and a landmark in Taichung. The park was built by the Japanese during the Japanese-occupied period.
Taichung Park is around 100,000m2 in size and has an artificial lake, called Sun Moon Lake 日月湖 which covers an area of 13,530m2, pavilions, bridges, and landscaped open grass fields, trees, and gardens. Huxin Pavilion 湖心亭 is the pavilion in the centre of Sun Moon Lake 日月湖 connected by the adjacent Zhongshan Bridge 中山桥.
Notably, visitors will enjoy seeing squirrels and pigeons around the shady trees, and plenty of fish and turtles swimming in the Sun Moon Lake.
Taichung Park is conveniently located in the Taichung city centre, 900m (or a short 12-minute walk) from the Taichung Railway Station 台中火车站.
The park is a popular destination for local residents and families for family outings, walking, relaxing in green grass and trees, and enjoying the fresh air in the city centre. Many newly-wed couples choose the park for their wedding photoshoot.
The Walk – Taichung Park 台中公园
Take a walk on the flat walking paths around the lake and cross the arch bridges to visit Huxin Pavilion 湖心亭 in the centre of Sun Moon Lake 日月湖. Relax and enjoy watching fish and turtles swimming in the lake, and sometimes the company of squirrels and pigeons. Also, explore the other areas of Taichung Park.
If you visit Taichung Park in the evening, you may continue walking to the nearby night markets such as Yizhong Street Night Market 一中街夜市 and Zhonghua Road Night Market 中華路夜市. Both night markets are within a 5-minute walk away.
