South Bank
Brisbane River, which flows from Lake Wivenhoe in the northwest of the river city Brisbane, curves its way through Brisbane city and many Brisbane suburbs. There are many scenic riverside parklands all along the banks of the Brisbane River in these suburbs. South Bank Parklands is one of them.
South Bank, a suburb located on the southern bank of Brisbane River and just south of Brisbane CBD, is Brisbane’s lifestyle and cultural precinct.
Here in South Bank, you will find the Queensland Art Gallery, Gallery of Modern Art, State Library of Queensland, Queensland Museum, and Queensland Performing Arts Centre.
The Brisbane Sign and the Wheel of Brisbane are in South Bank too, along with many eateries, restaurants, cafes, bars, and hotels.
All these attractions are amazingly within walking distance of each other. The best way to visit these attractions is by foot.
The South Bank Walk: Gallery of Modern Arts <> Streets Beach
A good starting point for the riverside walk is from the northern end of the South Bank at the Gallery of Modern Art. Walkers will then walk past the State Library of Queensland and Queensland Art Gallery before reaching Victoria Bridge – a pedestrian and vehicle bridge linking South Bank and Brisbane CBD. Victoria Bridge is one of the 16 major bridges that cross the Brisbane River.
The Brisbane Sign and Queensland Performing Arts Centre are right after Victoria Bridge.
Continuing on the riverside walk named as Clem Jones Promenade, you will walk past the Wheel of Brisbane and Neville Bonner Bridge, the recently completed pedestrian bridge linking Brisbane CBD and South Bank, before reaching Nepalese Temple, which was constructed by the Nepalese for the World Expo in 1988.
Right after Nepalese Temple is Rainforest Walk, where you walk on boardwalks surrounded by lush trees and plants, and South Bank Ferry Terminal, which is a CityCat ferry service stop. CityCat ferry service is a very popular public river ferry transport service servicing many ferry stops along the Brisbane River.
Not far from South Bank Ferry Terminal is the Streets Beach – a unique, free, and very popular swimming spot with Brisbane city skyline views.
From the Gallery of Modern Art to Streets Beach, walkers can enjoy unobstructed views of the Brisbane River and Brisbane city skyline. The one-way distance from the Gallery of Modern Art to Streets Beach is approximately 1.5km.
