Walk by the Waters: Ross Creek, Townsville

Located halfway between the tip of Cape York and Brisbane, Townsville is a coastal city in northeastern Queensland with a population of 234,283, according to the 2021 census. 

Townsville is a major service centre for northern Queensland and the main centre for government administration outside Brisbane.

With over 300 days of sunshine each year, Townsville offers a laid-back tropical lifestyle with a wide range of outdoor recreation options and is a popular tourist destination. 

Townsville CBD’s skyline is dominated by the distinctive Castle Hill.  The Strand, as well as Magnetic Island, located just a short 30-minute ferry ride away, are just some of the popular tourist spots.

Ross Creek Walk: Queensland Country Bank Stadium <> Victoria Bridge

Ross Creek separates Townsville city centre from the adjacent South Townsville suburb and connects to the Coral Sea via a bay inlet.  Breakwater Ferry Terminal, Reef Headquarter Aquarium, Museum of Tropical Queensland, Queensland Country Bank Stadium, The Big Townsville Sign, and Townsville Yacht Club and Marina are popular tourist destinations located by the banks of Ross Creek.

Two car bridges – George Roberts Bridge and Lowths Bridge – link South Townsville with Townsville city centre. 

Victoria Bridge is a pedestrian bridge, located between George Roberts Bridge and Lowths Bridge, that links Townsville city centre with the popular South Townsville’s Palmer Street Precinct. 

The short walk on flat walking paths and boardwalks between Queensland Country Bank Stadium on the south bank of Ross Creek and Victoria Bridge will allow walkers to admire Townsville’s small but unique city skyline with Townsville’s iconic Castle Hill in the background.   Walkers will also walk past Central Park and The Big Townsville Sign before reaching Victoria Bridge. 

The one-way distance between Queensland Country Bank Stadium and Victoria Bridge is about 1 km.

Feeling energised?  You may continue to walk across Victoria Bridge to Townsville city centre or to Palmer Street Precinct, where you may have a coffee break.
