Beitou Park 北投公园
Beitou Park is located in the Peitou 北投 district, best known for its popular Peitou hot springs 北投溫泉 and being at the southwest entry point of Yangmingshan National Park 阳明山国家公园.
The hot springs in Peitou can be very conveniently accessible by public transport. Xinbeitou 新北投 subway station, around a 40-minute train ride from Taipei city centre, is just a short walk away from the hot spring baths and many hot spring hotels in Peitou.
Visitors to Yangmingshan National Park can also take public buses to Yangmingshan National Park from the bus stops outside Xinbeitou subway station.
The 6-hectare Beitou Park is just 50m from Xinbeitou Subway station, just across Guangming Road 光明路 on the other side. The park was created in 1913, more than 100 years ago, as the first hot spring park in Taiwan.
Peitou Creek 北投溪, which is the hot springs water from the nearby Geothermal Valley 地熱谷, flows through Peitou Park and visitors can feel the warm water while walking on the creekside walk paths on both sides of the creek.
Beitou Hot Spring Museum 北投温泉博物馆 and Taipei Public Library Beitou Branch 台北市立图书馆北投分馆 are located within Beitou Park. Beitou Hot Spring Museum, formerly the Beitou Hot Spring Baths, was built in 1913 and was the largest public bath in Taipei at the time. The renovated 2-storey brick building still keeps the brick bath on the ground floor and the wooden rest area on the first floor. The museum has interesting interactive exhibits for visitors to learn about the hot spring bath culture. Taipei Public Library Beitou Branch building is designed to blend in with the park’s natural environment. A timber structure was used for the library building to suit the highly corrosive sulphur surrounding it.
Geothermal Valley (or Hot Spring Valley) 地熱谷
Geothermal Valley is the outlet of a hot spring that forms a lake with acidic sulphur spring water with water temperatures as high as 90 degrees Celsius. The jade-like green sulphur spring water and bursts of white smoke all year round make Geothermal Valley a unique and special scenic spot to visit.
Visitors can walk on the 360-degree boardwalks around the lake to have a close-up look at the lake and feel and smell the warm sulphur smoke. There are seating areas around the lake for visitors to stop and rest to enjoy the scenery.
Geothermal Valley is one of the sources supplied to hot spring baths or hotels in Beitou.
