Newcastle
Located a 2.5-hour drive north of Sydney, Newcastle is the second largest city of New South Wales after Sydney and the 7th largest city in Australia, with a population of just over 470,000.
Like Sydney, this coastal city’s spectacular swimming and surfing beaches, iconic ocean baths, and beautiful coastline are the main reasons visitors are coming to this vibrant and sunny metropolitan city. Newcastle has plenty to do outdoors in the fresh air from walking, cycling, swimming, and surfing, to cruising the harbour.
Newcastle is located within an hour’s drive from Hunter Valley, Australia’s oldest wine-growing region that has more than 150 wineries producing world-class wines.
Port of Newcastle is the largest port on Australia’s east coast, handling more than 4500 ship movements and more than 160 million tonnes of cargo annually. The port has over 20 berths, handling 25 different types of cargo.
The Walk: Newcastle Foreshore <> Nobbys Lighthouse
The walk starts at the waterfront walking path alongside Wharf Road next to the 11-hectare Newcastle Foreshore Park, a popular venue for many community events.
Following the footpath in the northeast direction alongside Wharf Road towards Nobbys Lighthouse, you will walk past Nobbys Beach on the east side and Horseshoe Beach on the west side.
The iconic Nobbys Lighthouse, located on the summit of Nobbys Headland, is an operating lighthouse that started its operations in 1858. It is a 1 km upslope walk up to Nobbys Lighthouse. The lighthouse ground is open during weekend daylight hours.
Nobbys Beach is a popular swimming spot for families. Remarkedly, Nobbys Beach was actually not a natural beach. The beach was gradually formed after the construction of a rock pier back in the 1850s connecting the mainland with Nobbys Head, which was an island before Nobbys Lighthouse was built.
Very often, as you walk on the waterfront walking paths between Newcastle Foreshore and Nobbys Lighthouse, you see tugboats guiding huge cargo ships to move in and out of the port.
