Keelung 基隆
Keelung 基隆, located in the Northwest of Taiwan, along with Kaohsiung 高雄 in the south, are the two major port cities in Taiwan.
With a population of more than 350,000, Keelung is itself a popular tourist destination because of its many historic sites and buildings, its proximity to beautiful coastlines and mountains, as well as its good food. Yehliu Geopark 野柳地质公园, Heping Island GeoPark 和平岛地质公园, Baimiweng Fort 白米瓮炮台, Dawulun Fort 大武仑炮台, Miaokou Night Market 庙口夜市, and Ren’ai Market 仁愛市场 are just some of the attractions in and around Keelung.
Keelung is an hour from Taipei by train or car and that makes Keelung a perfect day trip destination from Taipei.
Keelung Harbour 基隆港 is located adjacent to Keelung city centre. Keelung waterfront area overlooks Keelung Harbour. At the Keelung waterfront, the huge Guomen Square 国门广场 and Maritime Plaza 海洋广场 are popular viewing platforms of Keelung Harbour and Keelung city skyline. Because of their proximity to train stations and major bus terminals, they are often used as meeting points and are preferred locations for concerts, exhibitions, and other community events.
The Walk – Keelung Waterfront
You may start the walk at Keelung Customs Office building 海港大楼, and walk past the Marina, Guomen Square 国门广场 and then Maritime Plaza海洋广场. On weekends, you may have the opportunity to take part in a community event at Guomen Square and Maritime Plaza.
Take your time to enjoy the harbour views and Keelung city skyline. On your left, you will see the huge “Keelung” landmark sign on Huzishan 虎仔山. Continue walking past Maritime Plaza by the water and you will arrive at the Port of Keelung 基隆港 Building. This is a short 500m walk.
You may cross the Aiyi Road 愛一路 and Zhongzheng Road 中正路 pedestrian crossing to East Coast by Breeze 微風東岸 shopping mall and go up the third storey where there is a viewing platform with a unique top-down view of Keelung Harbour. This is the level where you can enjoy a meal at one of the many inexpensive restaurants.
