Walk by the Waters: Kangaroo Point Cliffs Park, Brisbane

Cliffs Park

Brisbane River, which flows from Lake Wivenhoe in the northwest of the river city Brisbane, curves its way through Brisbane city and many Brisbane suburbs.  There are many scenic riverside parklands all along the banks of Brisbane River in these suburbs.

Cliffs Park in the Brisbane suburb of Kangaroo Point is a unique park located by the bank of Brisbane River and right next to Kangaroo Point Cliffs.  Kangaroo Point Cliffs comprise a 20m to 25m tall vertical rock face that extends most of the length of the Cliffs Park.  The cliffs are the remains of 150 years of quarrying activities and are a heritage-listed site.

Very often you see rock climbers practicing rock climbing in the Cliffs Park.  The area at the bottom of the cliffs is wide enough to accommodate car parking spaces, walking and cycling paths, a wooden boardwalk winding through mangroves, and open grassed and landscaped picnic areas with tables, benches, and BBQ facilities.

There are stairs to get to the top of the cliffs – Kangaroo Point Cliffs Stairs near Joey’s Italian Restaurant and the stairs that lead to Lower River Terrace near the Kangaroo Point Cliffs Lookout Scout Place.

The Walk

The 2 sets of stairs connect the walking paths in the Cliffs Park at the bottom and the top of the cliffs.  This means you can take the stairs and walk on the walking paths at the top and the bottom of the cliffs in a loop.

At the top of the cliffs, you get to enjoy bird’s eye views of the Brisbane CBD skyline and City Botanic Gardens right across the other side of Brisbane River.  In the further western direction, you get to view the South Bank skyline and Captain Cook Bridge over Brisbane River.

At the bottom of the cliffs, you can get close to the waters of Brisbane River, walk on the boardwalk winding through mangroves, and sit on the benches and enjoy the views of Brisbane River and CityCat ferries that run up and down the river.

The loop distance is about 1.5 km and you will need to walk up and down steep stairs and steps.

If you drive, you may park your car at the many car park spaces at the bottom of the cliffs or the top of the cliffs.
