Walk by the Waters: Kallang River, Singapore

Kallang River

The 10 km-long Kallang River is Singapore’s longest river.  Starts at Lower Peirce Reservoir in the centre of Singapore, Kallang River flows through several housing and industrial estates such as Ang Mo Kio, Bishan, Toa Payoh, Bendemeer, and Kallang Bahru, before meeting Geylang River at Kallang Basin and Singapore River at Marina Bay in the south of Singapore.

Kallang Sporting Precinct

Kallang Basin area has been developed into a sporting precinct with sporting facilities which includes Singapore National Stadium, Singapore Indoor Stadium, Singapore Sports Museum, Singapore Sports Hub, Sports Hub library, and community sports facilities such as a water sports centre.

The Walk

You may start your walk on Stadium Riverside Walk outside Kallang Wave Mall next to the Singapore National Stadium.   If you don’t drive and travel on Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) trains, MRT Circle Line’s Stadium station is next to Kallang Wave Mall and is a short walk to Stadium Riverside Walk.

Stadium Riverside Walk extends past the water sports centre where you sometimes see canoeists and dragon boat teams training on the water.  You will walk past Singapore Indoor Stadium and continue to Tanjong Rhu Suspension Bridge to reach Tanjong Rhu Pier and Lookout Tower on the other side of the water.

Climb up the Lookout Tower to enjoy panoramic views of the Kallang River and Kallang Basin area, as well as the city skyline, before heading back to Kallang Wave Mall.

The one-way distance between Kallang Wave Mall and Tanjong Rhu Lookout Tower is about 1 km.

Not enough?  You may continue walking along Tanjong Rhu Promenade by the riverside to Benjamin Sheares Bridge, which is 2 km away.

If you want to avoid the hot and humid Singapore weather, early mornings and evenings are the best times for taking this walk.
