Walk by the Waters: Bangkok Lumphini Park, Thailand

Bangkok

Covering an area of 1,568.7 square kilometers in the lower delta of the Chao Phraya River, Bangkok is Thailand’s capital and the largest city. Bangkok is huge and is about twice the size of the whole of Singapore. Bangkok city has a population of around 11.4 million. Greater Bangkok, which includes its metropolitan areas, has a population of around 17 million, or around 23% of Thailand’s 71.6 million total population.

Bangkok’s notorious road traffic is well-known. However, its rapidly developing metro train network helps to ease the situation somewhat. In addition, another way to avoid the chaotic traffic is by taking river boats to reach riverside venues. Bangkok has been called the “Venice of the East” because of its network of canals linking to the Chao Phraya River. Many of these canals are still being used for river transport and daily life, such as floating markets.

Bangkok is one of the most-visited cities in the world by over 15 million people annually. Tourists enjoy Bangkok’s vibrant street life, featuring street markets and affordable, delicious street food, as well as ancient Buddhist temples that blend seamlessly with modern skyscrapers. The city boasts a rich culture and traditions, along with exciting nightlife.

Lumphini Park

Lumphini Park is Bangkok’s first public park, created a century ago when King Rama VI donated the land to the nation.

The 0.57-square-kilometre Lumphini Park features an artificial lake, jogging paths, playgrounds, and open lawns. The park’s 2.5 km loop is a favorite among joggers. The artificial lake has paddle boats available for rental. Lumphini Recreation Center, which has tennis courts, badminton courts, and an outdoor swimming pool, is located in the park. The park also has a Chinese-themed garden at its southeast corner. The park is famous for its population of large water monitor lizards, which have become a quirky attraction for visitors.

The park is within short walking distances from 3 metro train stations – Lumphini Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT) Station at the southeast corner, and Si Lom MRT Station and Sala Daeng Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS) Station at the southwest corner. Being so accessible, it is no wonder that the park is a favorite hangout destination for tourists and locals alike. The park attracts 10,000–15,000 visitors daily.

The Walk

The most convenient public transport to get to Lumphini Park is by taking the metro train to Lumphini MRT Station, Si Lom MRT Station, or Sala Daeng BTS Station.

While in the park, take a walk on the walking paths surrounding the lake.

The park is generally open daily from 4:30 am to 9 pm. The best time to visit the park is either early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat.
