Guildford Rail Bridge as viewed from Fishmarket Reserve over the Swan River

Walk by The Swan River: Fishmarket Reserve <-> Success Hill Reserve

Fishmarket Reserve

Fishmarket Reserve in the Guildford suburb is located on the bank of the Swan River.  The reserve is quite huge with around 400m walk trail lining the riverbank, and largely left in a natural state.  Like many reserves by the Swan River, you may sit on a bench by the riverbank, enjoy the picturesque riverview under a huge shady tree and appreciate the tranquil surroundings.

The reserve has other facilities such as barbecues, picnic tables, playground, and plenty of parking on gravel ground.   Unfortunately, there is no toilet facility in the reserve.  There is a boat ramp suitable for launching small boats, canoes, or kayaks.  The reserve is a great spot for fishing.  Access to the reserve is via a gravel track.

So why is the reserve named Fishmarket Reserve?  Internet searches showed that this reserve was originally planned back in 1929 as a town market, and was only ever used as a fish market, hence the name.  Later, the area was found to be susceptible to floods and not suitable for market use.

Looking across the Swan River, you will see Success Hill Reserve on higher ground on the other side of the Swan River.

Success Hill Reserve

Success Hill Reserve in the Bassendean suburb is located on the bank of the Swan River on the opposite side of Fishmarket Reserve.  From the higher ground of Success Hill Reserve, you will have a good view of Fishmarket Reserve.

Success Hill Reserve has both open grassed areas and urban bushland areas. Facilities at the reserve include toilets, playground, barbecues, and picnic facilities.  What about having a family picnic here?

The location is a popular fishing spot.
