Shoalwater foreshore
Shoalwater foreshore is within the Rockingham city and is around 48 km (30 miles) southwest of the Perth CBD and 4 km (2.5 miles) south of Rockingham city centre.
The Shoalwater foreshore pathway runs between Boundary Road and Mersey Point. Near Boundary Road, there is ample roadside parking so if you drive, so it is a good start point for your walk. The one-way distance between Boundary Road and Mersey Point is about 2.1 km (1.3 miles).
You will walk past Lions Park, which has a playground and gym equipment. Lion Park is about 750 m (0.45 miles) from Mersey Point.
Mersey Point is the departure point for the ferry services to Penguin Island, an island just 500 m (0.3 miles) from Mersey Point.
Shoalwater Islands Marine Park
Shoalwater Islands Marine Park stretches from Cape Peron to Port Kennedy and includes limestone reefs and islands offshore and beaches on the mainland. Therefore, Shoalwater beach and Penguin Island are all part of Shoalwater Islands Marine Park.
Penguin Island
Penguin Island is open daily between mid-September and early June, subject to weather. Penguin Island Conservation Park has pathways, boardwalks, and sandy beaches for visitors to explore and enjoy observing marine wildlife.
There is a 500 m (0.3 miles) long shallow sand shoal connecting Mersey Point and Penguin Island. Thinking about walking on the sandbar to Penguin Island? No! Government of WA Parks & Wildlife Services has warned not to walk or wade across the sandbar to Penguin Island because strong rips and currents can occur, and water depth and conditions can change rapidly.
