According to The Shire of Nannup website, the Shire of Nannup has a population of 1328 with about half of the population residing in the Nannup townsite.
There is one more reason to visit Nannup in August or September, the Nannup’s Flower and Garden Festival.

Lake Clifton – Thrombolites Site
From Nannup on the way back to Perth, Lake Clifton thrombolites site is a 2-hour drive north of Nannup on the Old Coast Road.
Visitors are drawn to Lake Clifton thrombolites site to see and appreciate these micro-organisms, believed to be one of the earliest lifeforms on earth.
The rock-like structures of thrombolites are built by these micro-organisms. They are very fragile and need to be protected, so do not attempt to cause any damage to these rock-like structures.
The boardwalk built out to the lake allows visitors to have a closer look at these rock-like structures. During high tides, they are submerged underwater. During low tides, you could see them exposed above water.
Thrombolites are not commonly found. They need groundwater source supersaturated in calcium bicarbonate. Only 5 thrombolites sites were identified in Western Australia. Interested to learn more?
