A view of Bunbury city centre from Marlston Hill Lookout Tower

Walk by The Indian Ocean: Marlston Hill Lookout <-> Bunbury Lighthouse

Bunbury

Bunbury is 180km or about a 2-hour drive south of Perth.  With a population of over 31,000, the coastal city is a beautiful place to live, work, or visit.

If you visit Bunbury and like to go for a walk close to the water, then you will enjoy walking from Marlston Hill Lookout Tower to Bunbury Lighthouse, then walking paths alongside Ocean Drive by the beach to allow you to walk and enjoy the magnificent views of the Indian Ocean at the same time.

Marlston Hill Lookout Tower

Start the walk by first climbing to the top of Marlston Hill Lookout Tower.

From the top of the tower, you have 360-degree unblocked views of the Bunbury city centre to the south and southeast, Bunbury Lighthouse and Back Beach by the Indian Ocean to the west, Bunbury Harbour to the north, and Koombana Bay to the east.

From Marlston Hill Lookout Tower, take Apex Drive, then Marlston Drive to walk towards Bunbury Lighthouse, which is about 500m from the lookout tower.

Bunbury Lighthouse

Bunbury Lighthouse is a striking landmark with its distinctive black and white chequered exterior.  Built in 1971, the lighthouse is 25m tall, and you can see the lighthouse from most places in Bunbury.

Bunbury Lighthouse is not open to the public and you can only view it from the outside.

Walking paths around the lighthouse alongside Ocean Drive and the beach are popular with the local walkers.  If you are lucky, you may see dolphins loitering close to the beach.  If you continue on the walking paths along the coast in the southern direction, Wyalup-Rocky Point is just about 400m from the lighthouse.

Wyalup-Rocky Point

Wyalup-Rocky Point refers to an area with extensive ancient black basaltic rock formation, located at the north end of Back Beach.   Wyalup is a place of Indigenous significance and means a ‘place of mourning’ as in the past the area was a Noongar burial ground.

Feeling energetic?  You may continue walking in the southern direction on the beachside walking paths alongside Ocean Drive towards Mindalong Beach, which is 4km away.
