Marina Bay Reservoir and Marina Bay Sands, Singapore

Marina Bay Reservoir, Singapore

Do you know Singapore Marina Bay is a freshwater reservoir?  Do you know that before 2008 the water here was seawater?

In 2008, a dam, Marina Barrage, was built at the mouth of Marina Channel.  Through natural desalination, in 2 years by 2010, the Marina Bay area became Singapore’s largest freshwater reservoir.  This reservoir is roughly one-sixth of the land size of Singapore.  It stretches from the marina area to include the Singapore River, Kallang River, and Geylang River.  This reservoir supplies roughly 10% of Singapore water demand.

This mega project provides huge multiple benefits.   Other than being an additional water supply and for floor control, all around the reservoir have been well developed into lifestyle and tourist attractions.  Amongst the attractions are Singapore Marina Bay Sands Resort, ArtScience Museum, Merlion Park, Esplanade, and Waterfront Promenade.

Explore by foot is a good way to see and to experience the sights and scenes of Marina Bay.  You may take the route Raffles Place -> Merlion Park -> Esplanade -> Marina Bay Sands -> ArtScience Museum.
