Lake Parramatta

Lake Parramatta is a man-made water reservoir located within Lake Parramatta Reserve, 3-kilomatre north of Parramatta city centre and 30-kilometre, or a 30-minute drive, west of Sydney CBD.  Lake Parramatta was created after the completion of a 15m high dam on Hunts Creek in 1856. The dam was closed in 1909.

Lake Parramatta now serves as a recreational area for locals and visitors.

Lake Parramatta has a designated swimming area patrolled by lifeguards during daylight hours. It is open from October through the summer months each year. Read more about swimming in Lake Parramatta on the City of Parramatta website.

There are also boat hire facilities, BBQ facilities, playgrounds, and a café which make Lake Parramatta a good place for family outings and group gatherings.

The 73-hectare (0.73-square-kilometre) Lake Parramatta Reserve consisting of Lake Parramatta and surrounding parkland is a popular destination for bushwalking in Western Sydney for both experienced and leisure bushwalkers.

The Walk

Take a leisurely short 300m walk on the waterfront walking tracks between the designated swimming area and Dam Wall Lookout to have close-out views of the Lake Parramatta dam wall.  To have a good view of the lake, get up to the rocks overlooking the lake near the designated swimming area.

Not enough?  Try the walking tracks of various lengths up to a 4.5km full circuit walk around the lake.  Read more about Lake Parramatta Reserve bushwalking on the New South Wales government’s official website.
