Lake Gnangara is just a 30-minute drive north of Perth CBD. The lake is really a relatively shallow wetland that has gentle slopes on the western and southern sides and steeper slopes on the eastern side.
The amount of seasonal rainfall determines the water level of Lake Gnangara. As a consequence, the water level is lower in the drier summer months and higher in the wetter winter months.
Very often, the western and southern part of the lake is usually completely dried out in the summer months. And as a result, the lake looks to be very much smaller. You often see tyre marks of motorcycles and quad-bikes on the dried-out part of the lake in the summer. It shows that motorcycle and quad-bike riders use this part of the lake for riding in the summer months.
The water quality here is known to be poor and therefore not suitable for swimming.
Lake Gnangara is used by nearby residents for dog exercising and walking. Dogs love to run freely on sand dunes and in shallow water. For walkers, expect to walk on sand dunes or the sandy track around the lake perimeter. There is no defined walk path. So, if you prefer to walk on a sealed or well-defined walk path, Lake Gnangara may not suit you.
