Malmo
Malmo (Malmö in Swedish) is Sweden’s third‑largest city, with a population of around 360,000in the municipality. A coastal city in southern Sweden, Malmo has one of the most diverse populations in Scandinavia, with more than 180 nationalities, including Middle Eastern, Balkan, East African, and EU communities. Malmo is a cosmopolitan city despite its small size.
Malmo is linked to Denmark’s capital and largest city, Copenhagen, by the Øresund Bridge, a 16 km-long combined road and rail bridge and tunnel that spans the Øresund Strait. Opened to traffic in July 2000, the bridge and tunnel allow a 35-minute train ride between Copenhagen and Malmo. Malmo is much closer to Copenhagen than Sweden’s capital, Stockholm. The city benefits from its strategic position at the Swedish end of the Öresund Bridge, enabling seamless commuting and business integration with Copenhagen.
Once a major industrial port, Malmo has transformed into a modern and sustainable city. Malmo is compact, highly walkable, and bike‑friendly, with extensive parks, beaches and promenades.
Kungsparken Park
Established in 1872, Kungsparken is Malmo’s oldest public park. Located just west of the city centre, Kungsparken is only a 12-minute walk from Malmo Central Station.
The park’s romantic English‑landscape design, sweeping lawns, mature trees, calm water features, and its proximity to the city centre have made Kungsparken one of the most beloved urban green spaces amongst the locals. Locals use Kungsparken for walking, picnics, reading, and slow cycling.
Kungsparken’s water system is entirely man‑made, developed during Malmo’s transformation from a fortified town into a modern city. The waterways are part of the Slottsparken–Kungsparken lake system, which surrounds the adjacent Malmo Castle and flows through both the neighbouring Slottsparken and Kungsparken.
