Swan River
Perth’s iconic Swan River has many beautiful riverside parks and walking trails to explore if you like to be close to nature, have a relaxing walk and enjoy the beautiful Swan River as seen at different locations.
One of these hidden gems is Kuljak Island, also known as Black Swan Island.
Most Perth residents know about Heirisson Island. A lot of Perth residents who work in Perth CBD drive past Heirisson Island if they take the Causeway connecting the suburbs of Victoria Park and East Perth.
Kuljak Island, or Black Swan Island
Do you know Kuljak Island is roughly as big as Heirisson Island? Both Heirisson Island and Kuljak Island are islands in the Swan River.
Kuljak Island, also known as Black Swan Island, is much lesser known than Heirisson Island. A lot of Perth residents may not even know it exists.
Kuljak island is located in the suburb of Ascot within the City of Belmont, close to the Ascot Racecourse. The island is connected to the Swan River Ascot shore by a road bridge and a footbridge. You can drive to the island and park your vehicle there. There are 2 carparks on the island.
The round-island walks
A round-island walk on bitumen walking paths around the open grassed field at the centre of the island takes about 20 minutes, which is around 2 km.
If you want to walk closer to the water, you can walk on gravel walking tracks closer to the Swan River. A round-island walk takes around 30 minutes.
The City of Belmont website has a very good map providing more information about exploring Kuljak Island.
