Walk by the Waters: Singapore Botanic Gardens

Singapore Botanic Gardens

The 0.82-square-km Singapore Botanic Gardens was established in 1859.  Although not huge by comparison with many others, Singapore Botanic Gardens is very compact, containing 3 separate water bodies, many walking paths, many themed gardens, and the very well-known and popular National Orchid Garden.

Singapore Botanic Gardens play an important role as a leading tropical botanical institute and is responsible for many exciting new hybrids of orchids through the Gardens’ orchid breeding programme.  National Orchid Garden has over 1000 species and 2000 hybrids on display.

In addition to being conveniently located within 5 km from Orchard Road, Singapore Botanic Gardens’ Bukit Timah entrance and Nassim entrance are also located within a 2-minute walk from Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Napier Station and Botanic Gardens Station respectively.

The Walk

If you don’t drive and travel on Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) trains, you may take an MRT train to Botanic Gardens Station and start your walk from Bukit Timah entrance and end at Nassim entrance, and then take a return MRT train from Napier Station.

Take the walking paths such that you walk by Symphony Lake and Swan Lake to enjoy the scenic water views.

The one-way direct distance between the 2 entrances is approximately 2.5 km, and longer if you make detours to visit the Gardens’ many scenic spots.

If you have time, visit the National Orchid Garden, which is located about midway between the 2 entrances, to admire the hybrids of orchids named in honour of many VIPs who visited Singapore in the past.

If you want to avoid the hot and humid Singapore weather, early mornings and evenings are the best times for taking this walk.
