A Lake on Heirisson Island

Walk by The Swan River: Heirisson Island

Heirisson Island

Heirisson Island, the largest island on the Swan River, is often overlooked as a walking destination

Heirisson Island, the largest island on the Swan River, is used as the main crossing of the Swan River between Victoria Park and East Perth foreshores, using the two bridges of The Causeway.  A lot of Perth city office workers drive past Heirisson Island every day to work.

Heirisson Island is often overlooked as a walking destination, even though it is just outside Perth city centre and is just roughly a 15-minute walk from the city centre.  A round-island walk will take about 30 minutes.

Part of the island is fenced and gated but the gate is always open for access.  And within the fenced area, you will find a statue of Whadjuk Noongar warrior Yagan, erected in 1984.  You may also spot some kangaroos within the fenced area.

To walk around the island you will have to walk under the bridges and on the beach if you don’t want to cross The Causeway.  The walking trail is flat.  Although some parts of the walking trail may be sandy or fairly rocking, it is generally an easy walk.  As you walk around the island you will enjoy the green surroundings and the views of Perth city skyline, Optus Stadium, Matagarup Bridge, and the foreshores of Point Fraser, South Perth, Victoria Park, and East Perth.

New Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge

The Western Australia State Government has recently announced a plan to build a new pedestrian and cycle bridge adjacent to The Causeway, connecting Victoria Park to the city via Heirisson Island.
