Walk by the Waters: Nice Waterfront, France

Nice

The beautiful seaport city of Nice is the fifth major city in France.   Nice’s metropolitan area has a population of around 1 million.

Nice is located in southeastern France, is on the French Riviera or Côte-d’Azur region, on the Mediterranean coast, and is at the foot of the Alps.  Nice is also only about an hour’s drive from the Italian border in the east.

Nice’s central location, its pleasant Mediterranean climate, its many beaches, and its coastal promenades have all made Nice the Mediterranean tourist centre both in summer and winter.  Many people said the best time to visit to enjoy Nice will be in late spring and early summer.

The beaches around Nice are pebble beaches, unlike the Australian sandy beaches.  It is not comfortable to walk barefoot or to lie on pebble beaches, but they are interesting to look at and the clear blue water is very inviting.

Do you know that Nice’s famous iconic seaside Promenade des Anglais is just a 5-minute walk from Nice city centre and shopping district, where Nicetoile shopping mall and Galeries Lafayette are located?

Promenade des Anglais is only just a short 25-minute walk from Gare de Nice Ville (Nice Ville Train Station) through the Nice city centre.

The Walk

One of the best walks in Nice is to start at Promenade des Anglais in the eastern direction along the beachside walkways towards Nice Port.

From Promenade des Anglais, you will walk past beaches such as Plage Beau Rivage, Plage publique de l’opera, and Plage des Ponchettes before reaching the Nice’s most popular tourist spot – the #ILoveNICE sign.

Continue walking from the #ILoveNICE sign you will walk past Monument aux Morts de Rauba-Capeù and you will arrive at Nice Port.

Walk to the end of the breakwater walkway to reach Phare de Nice where you will enjoy magnificent views of the marina and the stunningly beautiful landscape and harbourfront houses and apartments surrounding Nice Port on the one side, and Mediterranean seas on the other side.

The one-way distance between Promenade des Anglais and Phare de Nice is approximately 2 km.
