Walk by the Waters: Hobart Waterfront

Hobart

Located in the south-east of Tasmania island and by the River Derwent at the foothills of the majestic Mount Wellington, Tasmania’s capital city Hobart is a beautiful and vibrant port city.  Nearly 300,000, around 65% of Tasmania’s population, live in Greater Hobart.

The summit of the 1271m-tall Mount Wellington is only within a 30-minute drive from the city centre and can be seen from every corner of Hobart city.

Hobart is the finish line of one of the world’s greatest blue water ocean races, The Rolex Sydney to Hobart.

Hobart’s very inviting waterfront is its main drawcard for tourists.  Macquarie Wharf Cruise Ship Terminal is right at Hobart’s waterfront and is within a short walk of 800m from Hobart city centre.  The scenic marina, Elizabeth Street Pier, Brooke Street Pier, and the vibrant bars, cafes, restaurants, gift, and craft shops, and retail outlets are all making Hobart Waterfront area a lively and vibrant area.  Visitors can take a scenic harbour and/or Derwent River cruise such as the Derwent River Historic Harbour Cruise from Hobart Waterfront.

Hobart waterfront is where the Salamanca Market is held every Saturday morning.  The 300-stall Salamanca Market is well-known to be Tasmania’s most visited tourist attraction and one of the largest outdoor markets in all of Australia.
